WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO THIS PLACE?

This question strikes a chord, whether it is pointed at our world, our country, our neighborhoods or ourselves. With this in mind, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center is pleased to present CTRL+ALT: A Culture Lab on Imagined Futures.

CTRL+ALT is creative convening of artworks, performances and dialogues with artists and scholars who insist that knowing what the future holds is not a question of speculation, but instead agency. Whether their concepts of the future are based on outer space or inner space, a distant era or the next brief moment, the tellers of these stories commonly claim them as their own. Representing a range of backgrounds and identities, they show that even those who have long been pushed to the margins are the center of someone’s universe.

CTRL+ALT is the sequel to May 2016's CrossLines: A Culture Lab on Intersectionality, which occurred in Washington, D.C. to revisit the concept of American history through the lens of intersectional identities.

ABOUT THE LOCATION

CTRL+ALT will happen in 477 Broadway, the former site of the iconic Pearl River Mart.

Once situated in the center of SOHO, and just steps away from Chinatown, Little Italy and Tribeca, the Asian-goods emporium Pearl River Mart has been a point of cultural significance for New Yorkers of all backgrounds for over 45 years.

After vacating this location in early 2016, Pearl River Mart reopens as a pop-up Tribeca, with an official reopening in 2017.

Learn more about Pearl River Mart

CTRL+ALT will feature an exhibit in tribute to the history of Pearl River Mart, developed in partnership with Pearl River and curator Ryan Wong.
