Aloha from the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center
This post is a part of our awesome #GivingTuesday 2014 Showcase! See what else we’ve done this year.
Aloha, dear friends –
It’s #GivingTuesday and an exciting time for the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center! Our largest exhibition to date, Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation, continues to reach record audiences and receive enthusiastic reviews, including the recent Smithsonian Beyond Bollywood Film Festival and the celebrated tour of a special version of the exhibition across India. The Center has also created a vibrant online space for learning about the Asian Pacific American experience with features such as our popular book review and food sections. Finally, the Smithsonian has just concluded the quiet phase of its first comprehensive fundraising program — the Smithsonian Campaign — and we are now going public with this vital effort to renew the institution. As part of that campaign, the Center has been challenged to raise more than 2 million dollars, an amount that will directly benefit the Center’s priorities: national capacity building and innovative programming around Asian Pacific American history, art, and culture.
Join us in telling America’s boundless story. Help us show how the Asian Pacific American experience can be a universal lens for learning, reflect the American spirit, and spark the learning in everyone. Your gift to the Center will help secure a future where Asian Pacific Americans are recognized for their contributions to the American story—today, tomorrow, and forever. Every dollar makes a difference.
Exhibitions. Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation is a blockbuster exhibition that showcases the American dream through the experience of Indian Americans and immigrants. Beyond Bollywood’s curator, Masum Momaya, has recently returned from accompanying a travelling version of the exhibition on a tour of major cities throughout India.
Film Festival. On November 15, 2014, the Center hosted the Smithsonian Beyond Bollywood Film Festival, a one-day extravaganza of entertaining films created by and featuring Indian Americans. Filmmakers such as Mahesh Pailoor, Sendhil Ramamurthy, and Kal Penn shared their amazing American stories.
Digital Initiatives. The Center is a cultural hub of rich digital initiatives, events and exhibitions. We are a creative leader in rethinking museums in the digital age.
On behalf of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, we wish you a joyous holiday season.
Yours,
Konrad Ng, PhD
Director
