APA Family Day was AWESOME!!
On May 3, we kicked off our events for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) with an awesome Family Day Celebration! This year, the celebration featured our current exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History, Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation.
Kids of all ages cut out paper lanterns like those made for Diwali! We decorated our work with ribbons and glitter tape. It was a day of masterpieces!
At another table, we drew rangoli, like the intricate geometrical patterns made in flour in India.
At one point, the rangoli table received a demonstration from an expert. “Step aside, kids!”
With the assistance of a personal dresser, we learned how to put on a sari and picked out matching jewelry.
Sharmila Karamchandani gave a demonstration of some of the elaborate designs for henna tattoos.
Outside the Beyond Bollywood gallery, music blared through the hallway, as the South Asian Performing Arts Network and Institute taught us to do a Bollywood dance .
Magician Sreeyash Parlshikar gave a magic show that featured traditions from both India and the West. Audiences were amazed by his Indian rope trick.
And then he ate a sword.
Competition was in the air at the mock spelling bee!
We had an amazing time at APA Heritage Month Family Day, and it was just the beginning of APAHM! Check out all of our events happening this May!
