First up was the documentary, Cruisin’ J-Town, that traces the roots of Asian American popular music, focusing on the jazz-fusion band Hiroshima which formed in Los Angeles in 1970s. Hiroshima members Dan Kuramoto and June Okida Kuramoto took part in a discussion after the screening.

The film was followed by an outdoor concert on the Hirshhorn Plaza. The unique sound of Hiroshima is a combination of funky western rhythms and traditional Japanese elements—featuring booming taiko drumming and graceful koto playing. The band debuted music from its 15th album, Obon.

Sponsored by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program, Smithsonian Center for Education and Museum Studies, and Smithsonian Heritage Months Steering Committee.
