30 Apr / Defining America Through Immigration Policy by Bill Ong Hing [in AsianWeek]
“We are a nation of immigrants,” Hing states in his introduction. And certainly that is a factual statement. However, since the United States was established more than two centuries ago, the government has rigidly defined who is eligible to be American and who is not. From the anti-Asian immigration laws that began in the 1800s to the current laws barring migration from Mexico, the U.S. government continues to define and limit who will be welcomed and who will be kept out.
