An important compilation of essays, published posthumously, by longtime activist and Asian American Studies pioneer Ichioka. While numerous volumes focusing on the Japanese American internment already exist, Ichioka’s writings examine the specific period between the two world wars, exploring the generational conflicts between the first-generation immigrants and their American-born children, and the resulting dual nature of the Japanese American psyche – and how those factors played a role in the eventual incarceration of 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent during World War II.
