02 Mar / Mrs. Spring Fragrance and Other Writings by Sui Sin Far [in What Do I Read Next? Multicultural Literature]
A collection of short stories and journalistic writings by Sui Sin Far, whose work was the first ever to focus on the Chinese experience in the U.S. and Canada. Her short stories, many of which have been compiled in this volume, were mostly written at the end of the 19th century into the 20th, the first fiction in English by an Asian American.
Sui Sin Far, born Edith Maude Eaton in 1865 to an English father and a Chinese mother who was raised in England, moved with her family first to New York, then Montreal, Canada, where she grew up. As an adult she lived and worked on both the West and East coasts as a journalist and stenographer, all the while writing real-life stories about the Chinese American experience during a period of extreme sinophobia.
