29 Oct / 10 Things I Hate about Pinky by Sandhya Menon [in Booklist]
Vikas Adam is three for three (because he’s that good) in voicing Sandhya Menon’s bestselling rom-com series. Rematched with Soneela Nankani after the success of There’s Something about Sweetie (2019), the pair presents Menon’s latest frothy confection. The eponymous Pinky is another of Menon’s feisty heroines with complicated mother/daughter issues: Pinky believes her elegant, powerful, corporate lawyer mother is her worst detractor.
As the extended family’s annual Cape Cod summer break begins with a fiery start, Pinky invents the perfect button-downed boyfriend in exasperated response to her mother’s latest accusations. Serendipity provides Samir (from Sweetie), whose DC dream internship has fallen through. In exchange for a credible performance at her side, Pinky offers Samir the potential to work for her famous mother. Who can say no to such legit drama?!
Once again, Adam and Nankani make young love convincing, although the one thing they can’t agree on is how to pronounce Pinky’s father’s name: Nankani is consistent (but wrong) with “young”; Adam starts accurately with “Yeung,” but succumbs to “young.” Small glitch aside, love eventually conquers just about all.
