However, I feel like a disgrace to my Seattle-bred espresso habit every time I order a decaf, soy milk <em>caffe latte<\/em>. Yes, I\u2019m lactose-intolerant too.<\/p>\n<p>Then recently, my husband ordered himself an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Affogato\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>affogato<\/em> <\/a>(a scoop of vanilla ice cream drowned in&nbsp;espresso) while we were vacationing in Philadelphia. It seemed the perfect afternoon pick-me-up. The bitterness of the coffee was the perfect foil to the sweet ice cream and the caffeine gave him a much needed jolt after our heavy lunch. I was envious.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3845\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apa.si.edu\/picklesandtea\/matcha-affogato\/matchaffogato2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3845\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3845\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3845\" src=\"https:\/\/apa.si.edu\/picklesandtea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/08\/matchaffogato2.jpg\" alt=\"green tea and gelato\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apa.si.edu\/picklesandtea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/08\/matchaffogato2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/apa.si.edu\/picklesandtea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/08\/matchaffogato2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/apa.si.edu\/picklesandtea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/08\/matchaffogato2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/apa.si.edu\/picklesandtea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/08\/matchaffogato2-800x533.jpg 800w, https:\/\/apa.si.edu\/picklesandtea\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/08\/matchaffogato2-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3845\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nori furikake adds a savory component to the sweet-bitter combination of green tea and gelato. Other suggested toppings: white chocolate shavings or cornflakes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A few weeks later I discovered an affogato of sorts, but this time made with matcha, that shockingly-green tea powder, the star of Japanese tea ceremonies and assorted <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wagashi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>wagashi<\/em><\/a>. Thank you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bonappetit.com\/recipe\/matcha-affogato-with-green-tea-ice-cream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Bon Appetit<\/em> <\/a>magazine!<\/p>\n<p>I tweaked the recipe a little and sprinkled a little <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Furikake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>nori furikake<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(seaweed seasoning) on top. \u201cHuh?\u201d you might wonder. It\u2019s no more unconventional than a shower of Maldon salt over chocolate truffles.
