Yet, over the course of the past two decades, she earned an MFA at the University of Iowa \u2013 one of the nation&#8217;s most respected writing programs, published\u00a0four novels, began teaching writing at the University of California, Davis, and was\u00a0awarded a MacArthur &#8220;Genius&#8221; grant.<\/p>\n<p>While much of her writing is informed by her Chinese American immigrant experience, the versatility of her writing goes far beyond her suggested category. Her latest novel,\u00a0<em>Kinder Than Solitude <\/em>(2014), takes place amidst the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, yet was described by <em>The New York Times<\/em> as &#8220;a murder mystery, properly executed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, October 30, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/poetry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Library of Congress Poetry and Literature Center<\/a>\u00a0will join the <a href=\"https:\/\/apa.si.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/aalrmag.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Asian American Literary Review<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aast.umd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Asian American Studies Program at the University of Maryland<\/a>\u00a0in presenting Ms. Li for a reading, book signing and discussion on Asian American literature.
