On May 3, we\u00a0kicked off our\u00a0events for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) with an awesome\u00a0Family Day Celebration! This year, the celebration featured our\u00a0current exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History, Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kids of all ages cut out paper lanterns like those made for Diwali! We\u00a0decorated our\u00a0work with ribbons and glitter tape. It was a day of masterpieces!<\/p>\n

At another table, we\u00a0drew rangoli, like the intricate geometrical patterns made in flour in India.<\/p>\n

At one point, the rangoli table received a demonstration from an expert. “Step aside, kids!”<\/p>\n

With the assistance of a personal dresser, we\u00a0learned how to put on a sari and picked out matching jewelry.<\/p>\n

Sharmila Karamchandani gave a demonstration of some of the\u00a0elaborate designs for henna tattoos.<\/p>\n

Outside the Beyond Bollywood<\/em> gallery, music blared through the hallway, as the South Asian Performing Arts Network and Institute<\/a> taught us\u00a0to do a Bollywood dance\u00a0.<\/p>\n

Magician Sreeyash Parlshikar gave a magic show that featured traditions from both India and the West. Audiences were amazed by his Indian rope trick.<\/p>\n

And then he ate a sword.<\/p>\n

Competition was in the air at the mock spelling bee!<\/p>\n
