To commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, the National Japanese American Memorial Foundation and 29 co-sponsoring organizations hosted the 20th anniversary event at the Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism During WWII.

Former Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta was the featured speaker. A commemorative wreath was laid in honor of the Japanese American veterans who lost their lives during World War II, while 25,000 origami cranes were draped around the names of the prison camps in honor of the internees.
