The new showcase displayed a distinct Hawai‘i Sugar Plantation Wedding Outfit worn by Nobuko Sugimoto in Waipahu, Camp 1, Oahu in 1918. In 1868, the first 148 Japanese arrived in Hawai‘i to work as contract laborers on sugar plantations. Mr. Kichizo Sugimoto immigrated with his father in the early 1900s. Period cane knives, which were also displayed, were used by Japanese American workers to harvest the cane.

Also on display were first-class steamship tickets for Jip Chun and his family who sailed on the steamship Makura from Sydney, Australia to San Francisco, California in 1926, a journey which lasted four weeks. The Chun family was granted legal residency, exempted as merchants from the laws excluding Chinese from entering the United States, and opened a general merchandise store in New York City.
