A colorful and energetic lion dance accompanied by cymbals, drums, and gongs to usher in luck, happiness, and prosperity opened this day-long celebration of Asian and Pacific cultures.

The Smithsonian celebrated National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with traditional dances from Indonesia, Japan, China, India, Philippines, Korea, and Taiwan as performed by Asian American dance groups; Hawaiian halaus and musical performances from Aloha Boys; Japanese and Chinese choral groups and Toho Koto Society; and a tae kwon do demonstration.
