They begin with \u201ca firm bump \u2026 just below [their] left ear, about the diameter of a five-peso coin\u201d \u2013 and a confession that \u201cevery time I get sick, I always think it\u2019s karmic payback.\u201d Their doctor, they learn, was Imelda Marcos\u2019 personal ENT,\u00a0 and their access was made possible by their grandparents\u2019 intimate relationship with Ferdinand and Imelda \u2013 and from which Elle\u2019s relatives continue to benefit.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the Philippines, uncles work for ICE and the CIA; a cousin is employed at a defense company where \u201cIf I actually told you \u2026 I\u2019d be obligated to kill you\u201d is only \u201ckind of a joke.\u201d As they expose their tainted connections, the bump \u2013 initially a small orange circle \u2013 swells until it covers almost an entire page.<\/p>\n<p>Succinct at just 48 pages, their autobiographical focus appears as mostly brown, gray, and green panels of expressive selfies, intensified with accents in orange and red.
