Since his mother, Margaret, left three years ago, Bird is called Noah, anything to disassociate from her\u00a0since she\u2019s a PAO (person of Asian origin) who\u2019s being hunted for threatening PACT: the \u201cPreserving American Culture and Traditions Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s become the de facto voice behind the battle cry \u201cOur missing hearts,\u201d channeling stolen children and sundered families. Agitators, insurgents, and rebels have adopted that phrase (\u201cNot even her best line,\u201d Margaret muses) from her obscure poetry collection \u201cwritten while pregnant, in a sleep-deprived haze.\u201d\u00a0When Bird\u2019s new and only\u00a0friend Sadie disappears, Bird can be a bystander no more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBird and Margaret\u2019s world isn\u2019t exactly our world, but it isn\u2019t\u00a0<em>not<\/em> ours, either,\u201d Celeste Ng writes in her author\u2019s note, itself a must-read.
