She shares the same age, 68, with protagonist Loretha, whose beloved husband Carl<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>suddenly dies on the eve of her birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because Lo\u2019s always been so strong and independent, her extended family relies on her too much \u2013 especially for money \u2013 including her alcoholic daughter, her angry twin sister, her granddaughter (pregnant with twins), and a sweet stranger who\u2019s apparently Carl\u2019s only son.\u00a0Lo\u2019s four BFFs, bonded since high school, gather regularly to support one another, but they\u2019ve got their own challenges. Without Carl, Lo will need to work harder to turn the downhill upward.<\/p>\n<p>McMillan\u2019s deep voice doesn\u2019t exactly perform, but she commands instant attention as she reads with resonating empathy. One minor gripe: how odd to choose a moniker she mispronounces \u2013 Lo\u2019s Japanese daughter-in-law\u2019s name is Ai-ko, not Ah-ee-ko.
