Viljoen, head of the South African Defence Force, 1980\u201385, was a fervent detractor: \u201cI was a soldier, he was a terrorist. He was my number one enemy . . . My duty was to defend white civilization,\u201d which meant abandoning retirement to lead the \u201cnew Afrikaner freedom struggle.\u201d\u00a0Viljoen planned war. Mandela offered peace \u2013 and won.<\/p>\n<p>Catalan artist Malet\u2019s visuals capture Carlin\u2019s intense narrative in shades of gold, blue, red, and black, mixing photographic details with looser images and breaking panel borders to underscore immediacy. His multi-hued maps of the African continent are especially affecting.
