Her birth took her mother&#8217;s life, and her first betrothed won&#8217;t\u00a0survive to become her husband. Who she eventually marries is beyond her control, but she will find in her arranged union\u00a0that she has met\u00a0her\u00a0<em>hamsar<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a soulmate &#8220;of the same mind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Happiness disappears\u00a0when the Taliban arrive in Kabul, destroying too many lives. For the sake\u00a0of her three young children&#8217;s future, Fereiba abandons all that is familiar and escapes her homeland. Prompted by a misguided moment of stubborn independence, Fereiba&#8217;s son\u00a0Saleem becomes\u00a0separated from the rest of the family. In their frantic\u00a0search for a safe haven, Fereiba and Saleem will each bear witness to the brutal realities of life on the run, of the all-too-convenient abuses of undocumented refugees, especially, tragically, the children.\u00a0The kindness of strangers sustains the family often\u00a0\u2013 serving as necessary reminders of the saving grace of humanity.<\/p>\n<p>If Khaled Hosseini has a female counterpart in the publishing world, that would certainly be <a href=\"http:\/\/nadiahashimi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nadia Hashimi<\/a>. Both have families\u00a0of Afghan origin. Both have undergraduate degrees in biology. Both became doctors. Both are internationally bestselling authors. Hosseini has an almost\u00a0two decade\u00a0head start\u00a0on Hashimi\u00a0\u2013 which means she&#8217;s got ample time to catch up. He&#8217;s even helping her along, glowingly blurbing\u00a0her to prominence.<\/p>\n<p>Hashimi&#8217;s debut, the\u00a0gender-bender\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apa.si.edu\/bookdragon\/the-pearl-that-broke-its-shell-by-nadia-hashimi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Pearl\u00a0That Broke Its Shell<\/em><\/a>, earned\u00a0her international acclaim. Her follow-up here, which pubbed\u00a0last month, should draw\u00a0her an even broader audience: Hashimi returns onto shelves as an\u00a0already established, proven entity among booksellers and readers\u00a0with a sophomore title that is\u00a0more universal family saga which\u00a0happens to have an initial Afghan backdrop.\u00a0<em>Pearl<\/em>, with its\u00a0Afghanistan-specific narrative,\u00a0might be the more distinctive\u00a0novel, but\u00a0<em>Moon<\/em>\u00a0will likely prove to be\u00a0the more accessible to readers worldwide.
