From after-midnight Facebook chats to @replies to each other’s tweets to Tumblr reblogs, comic book artist Yumi Sakugawa\u00a0has figured out the modern logistics of 21st platonic romance. So as not to alienate\u00a0Luddites in friend-love, she also includes throwback exchanges that feature favorite books (Malcolm Gladwell<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Blink<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and Haruki Murakami<\/a>\u2019s 1Q84<\/a><\/em>\u00a0are such excellent choices) and enjoying “hello\/good-bye hugs [that are] a few beats longer than a casual friend hug.” In addition to her many\u00a0wise words, Sakugawa’s irresistible, imaginative, charming illustrations add layered examples of how to be a giving, deserving friend: making purrrfectly silly birthday cards, writing revealing letters in longhand, and risking rejection in the name of open honesty.<\/p>\n

From food trucks to jokes \u2013 “even the unfunny ones” \u2013 from\u00a0neverending conversations to “bad Photoshop drawings commemorating\u00a0our hang-outs,” friend-love isn’t\u00a0about swapping spit, but they are about lasting, meaningful bonds\u00a0we need to cultivate and nurture. All those instant social media connections aside, nothing replaces face-to-face, livetime, friend-love-ly sessions of sharing and caring.<\/p>\n
