\"'Twas<\/a>Originally titled “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” Clement Clarke Moore first shared his iconic\u00a0poem with his children on Christmas Eve of 1822. Better known by the first line, “\u2019Twas the night before Christmas …,” the poem was published a year later, grew in popularity, but was not attached to Moore’s name until 1844 when he published his collection, Poems<\/em>. For almost two centuries, the poem has been\u00a0synonymous with the anticipation of Christmas Eve\u00a0\u2013 for both children and adults alike.<\/p>\n

Countless variations, spin-offs, and even spoofs throughout the decades have kept the poem well-esconced in our imaginations. This recent version is surely one of many,\u00a0many<\/em> out there, but it distinguishes itself with much-welcomed\u00a0features that acknowledge and celebrate multiple\u00a0languages and cultures, seamlessly presented for today’s 21st-century multi-culti readers.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Nochebuena, a Christmas Eve of deliciously epic proportions. Only samples are offered below, but you’ve still got just enough time to add this literary treat\u00a0to your table this week …<\/p>\n

\u2019Twas Nochebuena
\nand all through our\u00a0casa<\/em>,
\nevery creature was kneading tamale masa<\/em>.
\nFor one of our holiday tradiciones<\/em>,
\nis making tamales<\/em> \u2013 not one, but montones<\/em>!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Getting hungry yet?<\/p>\n

And every last person, both chicks<\/em> and chicos<\/em>,
\nis needed to make our tamales<\/em> taste ricos<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In all-family preparation,<\/p>\n

Our lovely adornos<\/em> are hung up with cheer,
\nin hopes that amigos<\/em> soon will be here.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Out in the neighborhood,<\/p>\n

From casa<\/em> to casa<\/em>, parading we go,
\nremembering stories from days long ago.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We clink our glass marbles and play loter\u00eda<\/em>
\nwhile singing and laughing\u00a0\u2013 qu\u00e9 maravilla<\/em>!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Around-the-world author\u00a0Roseanne Greenfield Thong\u2019<\/a>s search for holiday\u00a0tamales<\/em> turned “sugarplums” to something more savory: “Visions of tamales<\/i> turned into visions of bu\u00f1uelos, pi\u00f1atas, posadas,<\/em> and more!” she explains in her “Author’s Note.” Versatile artist Sara Palacios<\/a>\u00a0took Thong’s playful transformation\u00a0and enhanced the new verses with a sprawling, diverse cast of extended family and friends who share\u00a0a very special evening\u00a0preparing, gathering, cooking, visiting, toasting, praying, eating, cheering\u00a0… and finally sleeping.\u00a0The result is a jubilant, mirthful\u00a0feast to be shared again and again indeed.<\/p>\n
