Narrator Peter Macon couldn&#8217;t be smoother and clearer: I couldn&#8217;t figure out &#8220;meejit&#8221; on the page,\u00a0but in\u00a0Macon&#8217;s voice, no problem (turns out I&#8217;m just the &#8220;eejit&#8221; who can&#8217;t understand &#8216;midget,&#8217; egads)!<\/p>\n<p>Bingo Mwolo is that &#8216;meejit,&#8217; a self-described &#8220;growth retard&#8221; who looks more like a little boy\u00a0than his full 15 years. Lest you have any illusions of childish innocence, he&#8217;s as streetwise as he has to\u00a0be to survive on slum streets: he&#8217;s seen and experienced far too much death than destruction than anyone ever should.<\/p>\n<p>Being\u00a0&#8220;the greatest runner in Kibera, Nairobi, and probably the world&#8221; keeps Bingo\u00a0ahead of the pack. His speed \u2013 and his seeming loyalty \u2013 makes him a highly prized asset to Wolf, a powerful\u00a0drug kingpin.\u00a0When Bingo\u00a0witnesses a horrific\u00a0murder, he&#8217;s forced to go into hiding at St. Michael&#8217;s Orphanage &#8230; which is anything but holy. Father Matthew, its white proprietor, is not exactly a man of God, but he manages to place Bingo with an American woman \u2013 a divorced art dealer \u2013 who has arrived in Kenya allegedly intending\u00a0to adopt. Bingo knows he needs to get away from both\u00a0Wolf and Father Matthew&#8217;s surveillance\u00a0\u2013 he&#8217;s\u00a0got a few\u00a0hidden resources of his own\u00a0\u2013 and the glamorous, mysterious Mrs. Steele just may his ticket to freedom on the other side of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Just who is scamming whom is a twisted, (im)moral tale of desperation, double\/triple crosses, and even a little\u00a0hope. From dirty officials to false gods, from\u00a0genius artists\u00a0to con-artists, from murdered mothers to murderous fathers,<em>\u00a0<\/em>James A. Levine&#8217;s latest is a rollercoaster ride of never knowing who to trust, unreliable narrators notwithstanding.\u00a0<em>Run<\/em> is another dire tale of what happens to discarded children: as he did in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apa.si.edu\/bookdragon\/the-blue-notebook-by-james-a-levine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Blue Notebook<\/em><\/a>, Levine gives voice to an otherwise invisible child. And Bingo certainly\u00a0has much he needs to say.<\/p>\n<p>Levine again proves his neverstopping impressive mettle: he&#8217;s a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/biographies\/levine-james-a-m-d-ph-d\/bio-20053676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mayo Clinic endocrinologist and professor<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/obesitysolutions.asu.edu\/people\/levine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">co-director of Obesity Solutions, a project of Mayo and Arizona State University<\/a> (where he also professors); <em>the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Treadmill_desk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">treadmill desk pioneer<\/a> who is all about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gruvetechnologies.com\/neat.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NEATly Gruve<\/a>-ing\u00a0to keep fit;\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0once more\u00a0an internationally bestselling novelist.\u00a0If nothing else, he surely knows about running\u00a0\u2013 clinics, projects, bodies, and stories, all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Readers<\/strong>: Adult<\/p>\n<p><strong>Published<\/strong>: 2014<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If, like me, you have trouble with accents, dialects, or unfamiliar vernacular, choose audible here.
