Han Ong, who made international headlines as one of the\u00a0MacArthur Foundation\u2019s elite Genius Grant<\/a> recipients\u00a0of 1997, refers to his second novel, The Disinherited<\/em>, as\u00a0his \u201cimagined homecoming\u201d to the Philippines. Ong left his\u00a0native country 20 years ago at age 16, and he has yet to\u00a0return. He thought he might go back a few years ago, poetically\u00a0marking 16 years in his native country and 16 years in his\u00a0new country. But there was that little matter of the passport \u2013\u00a0he has yet to claim his U.S. citizenship. \u201cBasically, my understanding\u00a0of the [citizenship] process is that it\u2019s cumbersome.\u00a0And fundamentally, I\u2019m just really lazy,\u201d he laughs. \u201cI\u2019m pretty\u00a0sure that I would be considered American and an outsider if I\u00a0went back,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n

Like Ong, the protagonist of The Disinherited <\/em>is an outsider\u00a0all around. Roger Caracera is the American black sheep of his\u00a0prominent Filipino\/Spanish family, the youngest child who\u00a0lacks the ambition and accumulated status of his two older\u00a0siblings. Shocked to be left half a million dollars by his\u00a0estranged father, Caracera, a 44-year-old deadbeat as his\u00a0extended family considers him, decides to stay in the\u00a0Philippines after his father\u2019s funeral in order to give away what\u00a0he believes is ill-gotten wealth.
