When Sabina Murray first heard that she had won the\u00a0prestigious 2003 PEN\/Faulkner Award for her short\u00a0story collection The Caprices<\/em>, she thought a mistake\u00a0had been made. Not until the house began to rapidly fill with\u00a0flowers and e-mails arrived from around the world did she realize\u00a0that \u201cthis was a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a major award in hand, Murray is looking at her\u00a0career through new eyes: \u201cEverything just feels different.\u00a0Before, I felt like what I was writing wouldn\u2019t\u00a0necessarily get read. Now, it\u2019s not that everything\u00a0I write will be embraced, but I feel like\u00a0there will be readers out there for my work, and\u00a0that\u2019s a very different place for me from which\u00a0to write.\u201d<\/p>\n

That different place, post-PEN\/Faulkner, has\u00a0become literal, with a recent move to a house in\u00a0Amherst \u2013\u00a0the first that Murray and her poet\u00a0husband, John Hennessey, have bought, where\u00a0they are finally feeling settled with their two\u00a0young sons. \u201cI feel so grown-up,\u201d she laughs.
