09 Jan / The Last Karankawas by Kimberly Garza [in Booklist]
*STARRED REVIEW
Debut author Kimberly Garza skillfully links brilliantly crafted episodes to create an unforgettable community in Galveston, TX. The novel’s core belongs to Carly Castillo, abandoned by her father and Filipina immigrant mother and raised by grandmother Magdalena, who claims Texas’ vanished indigenous Karankawas as ancestors. Belonging (and not) looms throughout.
Among the fabulous foursome of narrators, Filipina American actor Becca Q. Co deftly commands much of the sizable cast, ensuring Carly is occasionally questioning and consistently feisty. Her other standouts include Carly’s friend Luz, desperate to live without regrets, and Magdalena’s nurse Kristin, who aches for loved ones.
André Santana voices almost all the male characters, notably stalwart Jess, devoted to Carly, and most memorably as elderly Ike, who faces his eponymous hurricane at home while his wife of 52 years is hospitalized. Adriana Sananes expertly evokes truculent Magdalena and her friend Ofelia, ready to reclaim her healing powers. Reggie De Leon narrates visa-overstaying, cousin-seeking Pierre.
The final chapter’s title, “Galveston: A Glossary & Guide for the Uninitiated Traveler,” might suggest a mere afterthought, but satisfaction is guaranteed as lucky listeners learn of Carly’s two children, Luz’ consequences, Ike and his kitty’s fate, and so much more.
Indeed, staying well-tuned to Garza’s work earns enduring rewards.
