As eleven-year-old Xiao Mei’s is about to embark on a trip to Shanghai to visit extended family, her beloved grandmother tells her, “You are my messenger. Look everything. Remember.” As a Chinese American hapa, Xiao Mei reluctantly arrives alone in China, but she heads home filled with lovely memories and heartfelt messages.
