23 Jan / Miracle Creek by Angie Kim [in Booklist]

For those looking for alternate therapies, the Miracle Submarine in Miracle Creek, Virginia, provides HBOT – hyperbaric oxygen therapy – believed to treat such conditions as autism and infertility. Despite the many ‘miracles,’ the venture is anything but: a mysterious explosion kills two patients and seriously injures others.

Elizabeth Ward, whose son Henry died in the fire, now stands trial for murder; she’s painted as a desperate mother raising a special-needs child, who just snapped. What might seem initially obvious will, of course, prove otherwise, as victims, perpetrators, liars, and seekers peel away the layers of what happened.

Jennifer Lim energetically takes on the diverse cast, mimicking accents (although she stumbles with the few Korean words), modulating for gender, age, and circumstances with relative ease. Aural audiences are treated at book’s end with a bonus interview between Angie Kim and editor Sarah Crichton, in which Kim shares details about being a former trial lawyer, a debut author, and a mother of three boys – and how HBOT helped her youngest son.
