The first compilation since the early 1970s of primarily unpublished works by and about Asian American women, Making Waves brings together autobiographical writings, short stories, poetry, essays, and photography by and about Asian American women whose roots reach back to China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, and Thailand.
The book’s overall introduction, “A Woman-Centered Perspective on Asian American History,” is especially insightful. Divided into seven parts ranging from immigration to work to identity to activism, each prefaced by a haunting photo and section introduction, this anthology serves equally well as both a historical and literary text.
