This single-story novella, to be released simultaneously with the eponymous film by Ang Lee, was undoubtedly inspired by Chang’s own relationship with a Japanese collaborator during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai and Hong Kong. As part of a complicated political plot, a young student resister must win the heart of a powerful collaborator, but neither the heart – nor the body – is often a cooperative tool in a shocking game of life and death.
