With the advent of World War II, Yuki’s family is separated and imprisoned. Her father is taken away by the FBI, and the rest of the family is eventually shipped to Camp Topaz where they must face fierce duststorms, difficult living conditions, and needless tragedy.
With 27 young adult and children’s titles (and two adult works) to her name, Uchida is considered the foremost author of books for young people about the Japanese American experience. Yoshiko wrote between 1948 and 1991, and passed away in June 1992.
