02 Mar / Fresh Girls and Other Stories by Evelyn Lau [in What Do I Read Next? Multicultural Literature]
A stark collection of 10 stories, mostly about a desperate young woman trapped in a life of prostitution, drugs, and sexual abuse.
Author Evelyn Lau, a teenage runaway who lived on the streets for two years, writes frankly and unemotionally, drawing on her personal experiences. In her unblinkingly frank memoir, Runaway: Diary of a Street Kid, Lau said that she left home in order to have the freedom to become a writer, a career that her traditional upbringing would never have allowed. Lau has won numerous literary awards; in 1992, she became the youngest poet ever to be nominated for the Governor General’s Award in her native Canada.
