In the latest of Laurence Yep‘s Golden Mountain Chronicles, longtime buddies Cal and Barney are looking for a way out of San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1939. An invitation to join an all-Chinese American basketball team gets them on the road, but their game-to-game adventures toward national victory are not without the wearing challenges of endless racism and constant injustice.

Tidbit: Yep was a guest at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program’s literary event, “Three Chinese American Children’s Book Authors,” on November 6, 2005, together with Belle Yang. Da Chen had also been scheduled to attend – hence the three authors, ahem – but had to cancel at the last minute, alas.
