01 Sep / Love in a Fallen City by Eileen Chang, translated by Karen S. Kingsbury and Eileen Chang [in Bloomsbury Review]
Considered to be one of the great writers of 20th-century China since she hit the literary scene in the 1940s with a mighty bang, Chang died in obscurity in Los Angeles in 1995. Recently rediscovered thanks in part to filmmaker Ang Lee (Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), who brings Chang to the big screen this month (September 28 film debut), Chang should posthumously return to the literary limelight with new accessibility for Western readers. Her stark characters, created more than a half century ago, will undoubtedly resonate with today’s disconnected, searching generation, but it’s definitely a timeless must-read for all.
