ABOUT
The traditional gathering point where people, land and sea meet, the ‘ae kai is an area of exchange, convergence and evolution. It is a place where different perspectives come together, where ideas are debated, and solutions are created. As the backdrop for important community discussions, Native Hawaiian artists and cultural practitioners in collaboration with artists from around the Asia-Pacific region converge in ‘Ae Kai to explore the meeting points of humanity and nature, art and community, history and the future.

ʻAE KAI MURAL
by Nai‘a Lewis
‘Ae Kai–the mural–is visual narrative of the film. Both were inspired by the culture lab of the same name and symbolize the convergence zone, which in Hawaiian culture was the meeting place of the land and sea. In life, convergence allows for the mixing of diverse perspectives and energies. Created using Hawai‘i’s rich tradition of cultural amalgamation and innovation, the ‘Ae Kai Mural is both a catalyst for and an amplifier of important conversations and visioning.

It’s not about the art, the art is a tool for change and a backdrop to the conversations we need to have.
– Kalewa Correa, Curator –I’ve learned there are reasons we return to old ways and there are reasons to toss caution to the fire and create something new. ‘Ae Kai was a fleeting event, but the impact on Hawaii and the Pacific will echo for years to come.
– Adriel Luis, Curator –What led me to dedicate my life to art is its ability to bring people together, across borders and beliefs.
– Adriel Luis, Curator –Everything we need to survive and thrive is already here. Hawai‘i has a history of innovation and creativity because of our diversity, because of our willingness and the need to collaborate, because of convergence.
– Kalewa Correa, Curator –The Culture Labs are transformational, you know you’ve just witnessed something powerful, but it’s difficult to convey—the impact was limited to an in-person experience. When the third lab ‘Ae Kai was coming to Hawai‘i, we knew this was a story that needed to be told and something as rich as ‘Ae Kai deserved a larger story.
– Brandi Martin, Director and Producer –Ae Kai gave us the gift of 1,000 shades of hope.
