| December:
The next 100 years |
| Drum
roll, please: The stage is ready for the very final program of the
year for the Korean American Centennial Commemoration. |
The
Boss-man, Dr. Franklin Odo, director of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific
American Program, welcomes a ready audience. |
| |
| A
very small token of appreciation for all the wonderful people who
helped our year-long celebration be the best it could be: (from
left to right) Dana Tai Soon Burgess, Jodie Atkinson, Luella Ramos,
Roshni Lal, the Boss-man making his rounds, Cedric Yeh and Dr. Yoon
-Soo Park and Sue Walther. |
Andy
Hong of The Bob Hong Foundation (named after his beloved cat, by the
way) accepts an amazing thank-you print by David Chung from the Boss-man. |
| Oh
the surprise, the surprise! The whole office kept mum on planning
KACC project director Terry Hong’s amazing gift. |
And
there’s the gift! A hand-crafted, gorgeous piece of wearable
art by one of Terry’s favorite artists, Komelia Okim who co-curated
the “Dreams & Reality” Korean American art exhibit
with Franklin earlier this year. |
| |
| Terry
does the very last introduction of the year … singing everyone’s
praises, it looks like. |
Legendary
activist and attorney (and Zen Buddhist priest even!) Angela Oh gives
a sobering, realistic view of the future of the Korean American community. |
| |
| Women’s
Bureau director Shinae Chun, the highest-ranking Korean American in
the Bush administration, gives an overview of her career as an example
of the many opportunities open to Korean Americans. |
Judge
Jeannie Hong, the first Asian Pacific American judge in Maryland,
talks about the tenacity of her parents that inspired her own drive
to succeed in her own career. |
| |
The
final Q&A session proves to be
a doozy: an amazing exchange of ideas, thoughts and even a few quips... |
Angela
relaxes into her questions
and provides remarkably insightful answers. |
| |
| |
Pen
in hand, Shinae does
an amazing job answering
every point of even some of
the most convoluted questions! |
Jeannie
gets passionate about her community involvement as a judge. |
| |
A
post-program photo op with Franklin, Terry, program specialist Gina
Inocencio, development consultant Francey Youngberg and favorite KACC
poster boy Dana Tai Soon Burgess – who got some fabulous news
that night about his APA Program and Kennedy Center commissioned world
premiere, Tracings, which will begin touring
next year. |
A
congratulatory hug for Terry from hubby Gregor and Dana, too. |
| |
Sookie
Choi Kunst, a much-loved KACC funder, finally receives her most special
thank-you gift (she couldn’t find parking in time to be
in the limelight!). |
Let
the retirement begin! Terry laughs about receiving her very first
batch of post-program bon bons from Sookie to send her on her way… |
| |
As
the year began with commemorative flowers, so, too,
must it end with such blooms… |
The
very final shot of the evening: (from left to right) Jeannie, Shinae,
Terry, Franklin and Angela. And what a night to remember! **WHEW ** |
